If you are giving daily care and attention to your child with a disability who is under 16 years of age, you might be eligible to receive a Carer Allowance.
There is no assets test for Carer Allowance but there is an income test, your family's combined adjusted taxable income must be under $250,000 a year.
Once your child turns 16, they might be eligible to receive the Disability Support Pension.
Disability Support Pension
If you are 16 years old or older, you are eligible to receive the Disability Support Pension. Payment is NOT subject to parent's income or assets.
Basic conditions of eligibility:
- ages 16 or over but under the age pension age (65 years) at date of claim lodgement, and
- must have a physical, intellectual or psychiatric impairment assessed at 20 points or more under impairment tables,
- inability, as a result of impairment to work for 15 hours or more per week for the next two years, and
- inability, as a result of impairment, to undertake training activity which would equip the person to work within
the next two years, or
- be permanently blind.
